A man randomly slugged a female straphanger in the face in a Union Square subway station Sunday morning, sending her falling to the tracks, according to law-enforcement sources.
The victim was standing on the northbound train platform of the Nos. 4/5/6 stop in the Manhattan station around 10:39 a.m. when her 41-year-old attacker punched her in the face, sources said.
An NYPD spokeswoman told The Post that the attack was “unprovoked.”
“She lost her balance and fell onto the roadbed,” the rep said of the victim. “She was helped up by some bystanders.”
The attacker fled to the street but was quickly apprehended by cops at 15th Street and Park Avenue, just blocks away from the station, according to sources. He was arrested but not immediately identified.
The victim was taken to Beth Israel Hospital with facial injuries, sources said.
